Today was nice, but really really cold. I felt a bit sore but was quick kicking up the uphills. I watched a short video by Jordan Peterson after the run today. It was worth the watch; He was arguing that in order for one to be a virtuos indiviual, one must be able to accept that they are capable of doing bad things. To do otherwise would doom one to not being able to prevent oneself from doing bad things, since any act that one would do should be good given the belief that one could not be capable of a bad act. I appreciated the sentiment. Also been wanting to document my reading list from this last year, so Ill do that on this post.

A good day... Was only planning on going 6 but just kept going. Been reading Born to Run, I dont like it as much as Karnazes book thus far just cause it doesn't focus on running as much as a larger story about McDougals story involing the Tarahumara. It might surpass Ultra Marathon Man as far as my liking goes the farther I get into it.. We'll see. Also wathced breaking 2 with the roomates last night. It was an enjoyable watch. I think my favorite part of watching that documentary was seeing how humble and mellow the professional athletes were. The group seemed to be a rare breed for sure.

Today was perfect. I ran to East High with Ethan and we put in a 4 mile tempo. I was only planning on doing a 20 minute tempo, but ended up extending to 4 miles. We decided to switch out leading every 2 laps and then each pick something to focus on form wise every 2 laps. It was wonderful. I was so focused I didn't even realize how fast we were going. The first time I checked my watch was about 15 minutes into the tempo. I could start to feel the pain set in around lap 10 and then the 13th and 14th laps were the hardest. We ended up killing the workout tho & finishing with a 5:55 avg. tempo pace for all 4 miles. The last couple of miles we were dipping down towards 5:40 as well. We were speeding and it was a really good time. Then this morning we had a bunch of runner friends over to watch the Olympic trials. What a race! It was a bummer Jared Ward didn't make the top 3, but I was glad Abdirahman made in. It was crazy to see a 43 year old out run so many young elite marathoners.

Surpassed that 300 mark on the shoes today. Noticed the insole is starting to wear. Made me a little sad. Went an average of 6:40 pace today. We were cooking. We also had 850 feet of elevation gain. Id call today a success. We went to the top of campus over the top of foothill. Then we bombed down to Sugar House and all the way over back to the dorm. My side stitch is still hanging around not quite sure how to kill it given pedialite didnt work haha. The run was nice had a few good laughs too.

| | I PRd today. One of my best runs I've ever had. I ran up Turkey Farm clear to Yellow Knolls. Hit the first mile @ a 6:35 then booked it up 1200 feet of elevation in the next 40 minutes keeping an avaerage of 7:10ish pace on the way up. Then I turned around at Yellow Knolls & booked it back down. I clocked my first mile in at a 5:55 second at a 5:45 then a 5:55 then the rest were all 6:00-6:05s on the way home. I finished with 6:38 avgs overall and a half marathon time of 1:26:38. I could not believe it. I didnt even feel all that tired. I was shocked especially with the elevation gain I encountered throughout the run. Im wondering if I might be able to go after winning a half at some point soon.
In other news Im back home because they cancelled classes which is both really really nice and really quite sad. I'll miss running with Ethan every day. The world is feeling so chaotic wiht all of these changes hitting so quickly. It feels like some surreal events out of a book. Don't exactly know who I'll run with now that Im home as well. I might end up mererly having to go solo for the time being. I also started 100 years of Solitude & Born to Run. Im not sure what to think of Born to Run there are a few things about the story that somewhat irk me. 100 Years of Solitude however has been a very strange and engaging read.
Also did 8.3 miles of East Rim Trail today to shake out the legs with the fam. Was really quite beautiful. Id missed the strange beauty of home.

Took a nice quick run down to Sullivan & Back with Josh & Xander. Sounds like Dylan is headed back wihtin the next couple days cause of the Corona Virus. Should be interesting.
Also read about the song "Glass Onion" by The Beatles today. The meaning behind the song is quite funny. It's a metaphore about people peeling back all of these layers to a completely transparent object. John Lennon wrote it as a reaction to fans reading too deeply into their lyrics, which caused all sorts of conjecture about the band such as the conspiracy that Paul McCarteny had died. The song is an engaging reaction to the strange behavior of people.

Test Run
First Run in 8 Weeks. Couldn't believe how great it felt and how fast I was moving. Given this was a test run I should've been more cautious. Lettting myself cruise a bit may not have been the wisest decision I've had. What can I say? All the energy and excitement was there, the thoughtfulness not so much.
I've had a realization about running. I've decied it's one of the few wonderful things in my life that can move me outside of myself. I can say that over the past 2 months I do not feel that I've left my head. In practice, I'd suggest there are really only two things in life that seems to bring me outside of myself, those two things being running and social interaciton. Now since social interaction has been cut from the docket and I've not been able to rely on running, I've felt like I've largely been lost. However, this feeling has brought about a realization. I think that over the past two years of college I've been secretlly harboring a vice. I think that I've allowed myself to cut social interaction out of my life and instead replace it with running. While I've been able to survive and stil be happy, I see this act as a vise considering it still inhibits the amount of joy I could be experiencing. It seems running has become a crutch in it's own rite, a wonderful crutch, but a crutch nonetheless. That's not to say that I've totally misused the sport. I've spent plenty of great afternoons and mornings sharing a laugh with Ethan while barreling over hills. I've even gone out and raced for the joyous sake of competition and losing myself in the run. What I am suggesting is that I've not always been thoughtful when it comes to how much I rely on running, especially in seeing how fickle health can be when running. One morning you could feel just fine and the next you could wake up with some gnarly shin splints. Now, I hope to be a little more mindful when it comes to this downfall of mine. I'd like to better recognize when I am relying on running in an inhibiting way and when I am utilizing the sport in order to live greatly.

One of my favorite runs I've done in a while. I went down to 2450 and ran barefoot for a mile or so. I dropped a nice sub 7 going around the grass. I was really attempting to put a strong focus on my form, specifically my back kick and where I'm coming down on my foot. I think those are two qualities of my form that could use imporvement in making me lighter.
After the run, I still felt some pian seeping into my right leg where it had been injured. Not sure if I need to give it mor time or not. All I know is I've come back from worse injuries quicker than I have this one. Im gonna have to do some thinking.

Still just trying to not rehurt myself. Talked w/ someone today who'd torn their achillies during an XC season & it took 2 & 1/2 years to heal. And I thought I'd had it rough the last 6 months. I'm grateful that I'm able to run at all right now, especially with the nice weather as of late.
